Like the gospel of Luke, Acts is addressed to Theophilus, who was probably the patron who financially supported its writing. Yet Luke surely writes to a larger Christian audience, predominantly Gentile churches needing assurance of their identity as the true people of God.

Purpose

While the gospel of Luke records what Jesus began to do (Acts 1:1) through his life, death, and resurrection, Acts records what he continues to do as the risen and exalted head of the church through the Holy Spirit whom he has poured out (2:33). Central to Luke’s purpose in Acts is to show that the Christian movement now spreading rapidly throughout the Mediterranean region is indeed the work of God, the climax of his plan of salvation for the world. To show this, Luke demonstrates:
